What this lesson teaches

An attack is more than a damage number. First check the stated cost and any explicit requirements. Then apply stated Weakness, Resistance, damage, and effects in the complete fixture. Damage counters mark accumulated damage; a Pokémon is Knocked Out when its damage meets or exceeds its HP. When an opposing Pokémon is Knocked Out, the attacking player takes the required number of cards from their own Prize area into hand. Prize cards and other outcomes are resolved only as the current rules and complete fixture specify. Do not invent Weakness, Resistance, an Ability, a Prize value, or a hidden response. [Source: PKM-R1, p13 attack requirements; p14 Weakness/Resistance, damage, Knock Out, and Prize resolution.]

Reader objective

Use a complete teaching fixture to calculate damage and determine whether it causes a Knock Out, while separating stated facts from unknown effects.

Worked example

Fixture (not a printed card): An Active attacker has a legal attack that deals 80 damage. The opposing target has 120 HP and already has 30 damage marked. The fixture states a +20 damage modifier applies and states that no Weakness, Resistance, prevention, healing, or replacement effect applies.

  1. Start with 80 damage.
  2. Apply the stated +20 modifier: 100 damage is dealt in this fixture.
  3. Add it to 30 existing damage: 130 damage is marked.
  4. Compare 130 damage to 120 HP: the target is Knocked Out.

The calculation is not a claim about a real attack. A named card requires exact expansion/collector identity, current official text, and applicable errata. If the fixture omitted a fact that could change this result, the right answer would be “insufficient information,” not a guess.
